About the speakers:

Since joining Chatham House in 2004, Glada Lahn has worked on a range of international resource-related projects which intersect with geopolitical, economic and development concerns.

Her research areas have included petroleum sector governance, Asian foreign resource investment, access to energy in developing countries, sustainable transitions in oil and gas-exporting economies, Arctic extractives policies, the pricing and valuation of natural resources, and transboundary water relations in the Middle East and Asia.

Glada has led influential research on energy policy in the Arab Gulf, energy access amongst displaced people globally in 2015, and how climate change and decarbonization affect the prospects and choices for developing country oil and gas producers. She is currently working on CASCADES, a multi-partner EU initiative to assess the transboundary risks of climate impacts and make recommendations for actions on resilience building.

From 2002 to 2004, she was senior research fellow at the Gulf Centre for Strategic Studies and has since worked for a number of organizations as a freelance consultant.

She has a BA in Arabic and international relations, including a year spent at the University of Damascus between 1999 and 2000. She also has an MA in Near and Middle Eastern studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

Dr. Manal Shehabi (PhD, MIA, BA (Hons)) is an applied economist with expertise in policy-driving research on energy, economic, and resource sustainability associated with resource dependence, focusing on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Gulf regions. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies; Visiting Academic at St. Antony's College, University of Oxford; and Research Associate at the Economic Research Forum (ERF). Dr. Shehabi is Founder & Director of SHEER Research & Advisory Ltd and advises companies and governments. She's a polyglot, who speaks English, Arabic, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and knows basic Hebrew and Italian.

Dr. Shehabi's work combines academic rigour with innovative research to drive evidenced-based policy making and company solutions. Her impactful research offers important contributions to understanding and modelling energy and economic diversification, sustainability, subsidy reform, economic adjustments, and policy alternatives facing MENA hydrocarbon economies following the energy transition and oil price volatility. Using economy wide modelling with oligopoly and political economic analyses, her research made important contributions to the analysis of economic adjustment and policy alternatives in the face of the recent declines in petroleum prices, offering a unique and powerful mathematical model of the Kuwaiti economy, which is readily translated to other economies. Her research’s impact on policy includes providing an executable version of this model to be used by the Kuwait’s General Secretariat for Supreme Planning and Development (GSSCPD) for economic policy design, assessment, and implementation in Kuwait, and implementing capacity building internationally on sustainable economic policy, energy, and climate. She is also an expert of Kuwait's energy and economy. She is a pioneer in her work on strategy and modelling of hydrogen and decarbonization in Gulf states.
