Caabu and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) invite you to an online launch of MAP’s new briefing paper, Dealing with Death and Distress: The impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of Palestinian healthcare workers, on Wednesday 21 July. Through interviews with frontline staff, the paper assesses how responding to the COVID-19 pandemic while under occupation and blockade has impacted the mental health and wellbeing of Palestinian healthcare workers, and calls on the international community to take immediate action to relieve stressors on Palestinian healthcare.
On Wednesday 21 July at 2pm (BST, UK time), Caabu and MAP will hold a panel discussion – open to the public and with parliamentarians invited – to present and discuss the findings of the report. We will be joined by report author Celine Jabr, as well as Zeina Amro, Assistant Professor at Birzeit University and mental health consultant and Dr Ibrahim Zakout, Head of Nursing at the oncology department of Al-Rantisi hospital in Gaza, to discuss the report’s findings. Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP will moderate the discussion.

Globally, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has placed unprecedented strain on healthcare systems and healthcare workers. MAP’s new paper highlights the myriad of challenges that have negatively impacted the mental health of Palestinian health workers responding to the pandemic while also enduring the long-standing pressures of occupation, blockade and fragmentation.

Celine Jabr is the Advocacy and Communications Officer at Medical Aid for Palestinians, based in the occupied Palestinian territory, and lead researcher and author of the ‘Dealing with Death and Distress’ briefing paper. Celine was previously the Freedom of Movement Coordinator at Physicians for Human Rights and holds a master’s degree in international relations and diplomacy.

Zeina Amro is an Assistant Professor at Birzeit University and a mental health consultant at Medical Aid for Palestinians. Her work focuses on mental health and wellbeing in contexts of displacement, conflict and war.

Dr. Ibrahim Zakout is the Head of Nursing at the oncology department of Al-Rantisi hospital in Gaza, and has been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Dr Zakout was interviewed in this research.

Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan MP is a doctor and the Labour MP for Tooting, and has served as the Shadow Minister for Mental Health since 2020. Allin-Khan has a master’s in public health and previously worked as a humanitarian doctor across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, including in Gaza and Israel.
